THE COMMON COLD

Colds may not be serious diseases, but they do have a high cost in days lost from work and school, and in the sheer miseries they produce. Colds have been with us throughout recorded history. In ancient times nasal discharge from a cold was believed to be waste products of the brain. Treatments and preventives were as inaccurate. Some advice today is hardly more scientific: eat garlic buds or onions. Drink hot lemonade, inhale a little tear gas.
